2008-9 APMC Field Trips

APMC Field Trips happen monthly to provide member-moms and their kids an opportunity to get out and about, explore Austin’s kid-friendly places, and learn something along the way! Plus, it’s a great chance to meet moms and kids from playgroups outside your own and, well, one less outing YOU have to plan! The days and times vary, to try to include kids of different ages and schedules, so we hope you can join us for one, two or ALL of them!

September
Wednesday, September 17th
10-12:00
Zilker Botanical Gardens – DinoLand Exhibit
I would like to invite you and your children to the first of our Field Trips for the new club year! We will be visting the new DinoLand Exhibit at the Zilker Botanical Gardens on Wednesday, September 17th at 10am. A little information about the Exhibit from the Botanical Gardens Website (http://www.zilkergarden.org/about/events/dinoland/index.html):

Visitors will travel back in time, coming face to face with thirty life-like dinosaur models of every shape and size. These prehistoric creatures will take up temporary residence along the new Escarpment Trail (near the Hartman Prehistoric Garden) being developed by PARD staff. From the fierce, 33-ft. Daspletosaur (cousin to the T-Rex) to a herd of tiny carnivores – Compsognathus (Compies in the movie, Jurassic Park) – these scientifically accurate dinosaur models were created by Guy Darrough, a renowned paleontologist, and owner of Lost World Studios (www.lostworldstudios.com). Guy's dinosaurs have traveled to botanical gardens and nature centers around the country, but to only one other botanical garden in Texas – San Antonio Botanical Garden. When Dinosaurus Tex opened in 2002, it was "a watershed event", receiving rave reviews from over 90,000 visitors. The exhibit was equally successful when it returned to San Antonio in 2005.

I am sure you would agree that it sounds fanatastic and I am excited to kick off our Field Trips with the DinoLand Exhibit! I also wanted to give you a preview of the fun outings I have planned for us each month.

October
Thursday, October 16th
10-12:00
Crowe’s Nest Farm
www.crowesnestfarm.org
We are going to Crowes Nest Farm Animal Life Center! If you have never been to Crowes Nest, it is lots of fun—check out their website for details and pictures. It is best if you get there by 9:45 because our tour will start promptly at 10 with the cow milking demonstration in the barn. Then it's off on a hayride around the entire farm, and then we are free to walk the grounds at our (or our kids') pace and see whatever animals you want. Then we can meet back up at the covered pavilions for lunch. Bring a sack lunch or be prepared to buy snack bar food at their snack bar (hot dogs, chips, etc). Crowes Nest is located in Manor (just east of Austin)—you can see a map on their website. Crowes Nest is only open to the public a couple of weekends per year and on organized field trips, such as this one. So this is a great opportunity to check it out. That being said, I will regretfully not be able to make this field trip (Lane will be backing me up and will be there to meet everyone). Four-year-old Benicio is in MDO Tuesdays and Thursdays and I am the class parent for his class. While I had planned to keep him out of school for the day, I ended up with a class parent conflict. I am having to coordinate a teacher appreciation luncheon that day. I did not make that schedule—they did, so I ended up with a scheduling conflict. Go figure! If you have any questions about the field trip, please feel free to email me—we have been three times! Also, please RSVP to me and I will get all of the RSVP's to Lane. We hope you can make it!

See you soon!

November
Tuesday, November 18th
3-4:30
Ceramics Bayou
www.ceramicsbayou.com
You do not have to be there the entire time, you can come at 3 (or whatever time you can get there) work on your project and then leave when you are done. I know some people might be nervous about traffic at 4:30—but you could realistically paint and be on your happy way in less than 90 minutes and this time slot helps us accommodate naps and school schedules. I for one will stay as long as I can but since Nico is walking, he has no patience for sitting in a parked stroller and there is no way he is walking around a ceramics studio!

We will be painting ceramic pieces—you can choose something for you to keep or a holiday gift! The cost will be determined by the piece you choose—they have everything from dinner plates, piggy banks, picture frames as well as seasonal items like ornaments. According to their website they have over 400 items to choose from and the pieces start at $6. There will be no studio fees or fees for them glazing and firing your item. APMC has rented their party room for the hour and a half so come join us and see what masterpiece your little artist can create!

Please reply to me directly [carmen@austinmothers.org] and let me know if you plan on joining us. Let me know who you will be bringing along with their ages and if you know what you would like to paint, that would be helpful. I will be going there next week to give them an idea of what pieces they need to have ready for us and to pick the paints we will use. I just need to know more or less how many ornaments, plates, mugs, etc. We would not want to get there and we all choose round/ball ornaments and find that they don't have enough of them in stock (this is what we like to paint for our Christmas tree). If there is something specific you are thinking of, you can call them and ask if they offer it, how much it is and then let me know that is what you will be painting (like a large piggy bank or turkey platter for example).

December
Friday, December 5th
12:45-1:45 pm
Ms Renee's Preschool Classes
Gingerbread House Workshop
Northwest Recreation Center
http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/parks/northwest.htm

$10 per participating child
16 child max
I wanted to invite you to join us for our December Field Trip. We will be joining Miss Renee of Miss Renee's Preschool Classes for a Gingerbread House Making Workshop. We will meet at the Northwest Recreation Center (2222 and Mopac just East of Mopac) at 12:45 on Friday, December 5th. We will only be there for an hour (until 1:45 pm) and we will have to cap out our RSVP's at 16 participating children (due to space limitations). Please RSVP to me and let mw know if you would like to come and include your name, your child(ren)'s name(s) and their ages. Let me know if your children will be particiapting. For example, if I bring 14 month old Nico he will NOT be participating (so I will know he does not count towards the 16 max). The cost for this workshop will be $10. Miss Renee has asked that I remind everyone to bring their cameras because these yummy houses will probably get picked at as soon as they are ready! And if you have any Halloween candy you still want to get rid of, bring it along and we can add it to your house! In our family, the more candy we can get onto the house, the better! She will have Holiday themed candies as well as your typical colorful candies. Please let me know if you have any questions. I am out of town (have been all week - this is the reason for the late email - sorry) but will be back on email Saturday and will reply as soon as I can.

January
Young Chef's Academy (cooking class)
Wednesday, January 21st
2:00 - 3:30 pm
I wanted to invite all of you to join us for our January Field Trip to the Young Chef's Academy! I am hoping this time slot allows our preschool crowd and all nappers to work us into their schedule (and gets you going before traffic!).

I have picked the Little Red Riding Hood theme from their Fairy Tale Fiesta Menu and we will be making Zucchini Muffins (sounds like the perfect way to sneak zucchini's into the children). We will be reading the Little Red Riding Hood story, maybe doing a related activity and then cooking. This is an all ages Field Trip - if you think your child would enjoy some pouring, mixing and eating fun then we would love to have you! This is the perfect way to "sample" a class and see if your child might be ready for cooking school! We will be meeting at the South Location of the Young Chef's Academy but they do also have a Round Rock location for anyone interested in signing up for actual classes after our Field Trip. The cost will depend on the number of participants. If we have between 8 and 10 children, we will each pay $15, if we have more than 11 children, we will each pay $10. Please RSVP to me at your earliest convenience and I will send another email as soon as we have more than 11 children.

Info from their website:
Young Chefs® Academy is a unique culinary experience which offers cooking classes to children in a safe environment that encourages discovery and creativity. Each visit to Young Chefs® Academy is a new experience with fresh monthly themes and exciting new programs. Students sharpen their skills by employing the mantra, "Mise en Place" which, in the cooking world, translates into "Everything in its place."

At Young Chefs® Academy, we take the fear, mystery and the unknown out of cooking. In addition, each class and event incorporates supplemental subject matter which ties into each theme. Our staff of highly qualified teachers, chefs and nutritional experts carry out our mission to provide an interactive learning experience that gives children the opportunity to develop a life-long love for the culinary arts.

February
Friday, February 20th
9:30 - 11:30 am
Sportball!
Come out and join us on February 20th, 9:30 to 11:30am at the West Austin Youth Association (1314 Exposition Blvd) for a Sportball demonstration.

During the demonstration time, Sportball will show you their unique, creative approach to teaching sports to kids.

The popular educationally based non-competitive program, geared to kids from 15 months to eight years old, has classes that run throughout Austin.

Sportball focuses on developing kids' gross motor skills through sport. We focus on eight different sports—soccer, baseball, basketball, volleyball, tennis, football, golf, and hockey.

The Sportball program provides youngsters with a chance to learn fundamental sports skills in a non-competitive environment with boys and girls their own age.

Sportball sessions incorporate a proven curriculum structure with expert individual instruction. The goal of the program is to help youngsters develop both physically and mentally; improving balance, strength, co-ordination, stamina and timing as well as concentration, listening skills, co-operation and self-confidence.
